Slovak winemaking history can be considered truly exceptional and extensive. We can dive into the distant past, in which we can find a lot of evidence that in Slovakia are several wine-growing regions. Some of the evidence of viticulture dates back to the 7th century BC and confirms the fact that in our area the cultivation of vines was constantly expanding. However, the first written mention can be found in the Zoborské listiny from the years 1111 and 1113. In these years, Benedictine monks mainly devoted themselves to growing vines for the purpose of religious ceremonies. Currently, various grape varieties are grown in the surroundings of Nitra, which are influenced by the type of soil of the given location and also by the type of climate. By this we mean that each variety requires not only individual conditions, but also individual care.

The most favorable conditions for growing high-quality grape varieties are said to be in the area of the Tribeč mountain range, directly below the Zobor hill, further below the slopes of Považský Inovec or on Stračý hill (Kalvária hill district). The location Čermáň is definitely being talked about as well. It is interesting that Cermán wine was labeled as a medicine, which was also sold with this label. Allegedly, these healing effects were provided by lithium, which penetrated the soil through the fall of a meteorite that fell on Čermán in the past. Some residents of Nitra also owned vineyards in Krškanska Bita. In the part of Nitraske Hrnčiarovce and Pohranice, mainly white grape varieties are grown, which include Welschriesling, Grüner Veltliner, Gewürztraminer, Müller Thurgau. Among the blue varieties, you will find mainly the preferred Cabernet Sauvignon or St. Laurent. Newer plantings of vineyards are located somewhere in the area between Dolné Krškany and the village of Svätoplukovo. Among these plantings, the varieties are complemented by Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon.

Nitra is divided into several wine-growing regions, which are characterized by the most diverse natural conditions. And specifically in: Nitriansky, Pukanecký, Radošínsky, Šintavský, Tekovský, Vrábeľský, Zlatomaravecký, Želiezovský and Žitavský. Each of the districts consists of several villages, where we will briefly describe some of the surrounding ones. The villages of Cabaj-Čápor, Čakajovce, Horné Lefantovce, Ivanka pri Nitra, Jelenec, Kolínany, Kostoľany pod Tribečom, Ladice, Mojmírovce, Nitra, Pohranice, Šurianky, Veľká Dolina, Výčapy-Opatovce, Zbehy, Žirany are located in the Nitra wine-growing district.

The Sintava winegrowing district consists of the villages of Bojná, Horné Obdokovce, Kovarce, Lipovník, Ludanice, Nemčice, Nitrianska Blatnica, Nitrianska Streda, Oponice, Preseľany, Radošina, Súlovce, Šalgovce, Tesáre, Urmince, Veľké Ripňany, Vozokany.
